These are some places that we enjoyed the most in Nairobi :
Giraffe Center
1500ksh per entrance to experience a face to face encounter with these beautiful creatures is honestly a bargain! The giraffes are free to come and go in their natural space and you get a small bucket of treats to feed them. There is no time limit, so you can wait a bit to be alone with one of the animals to take in its beauty, and snap cool pictures. At the time of our visit, (mid november, 11am) there were 3 giraffes and it wasn't so crowded.
Kitengela Hot Glass studio
Incredibly unique place, we have never seen such a wonderfully decorated garden. We had nice lunch here, visited their shop and even took a Glassblowing class for 5000ksh (for 2 people). The class lasts for 30minutes and is a great introduction to the field. You get to keep the glasses you make ! You can get there by uber, but make sure that he waits for you because it's really remote. It's quite close to the Nairobi National Park, so you might negotiate a nice drive along the border on your way back. We spotted zebras, antilopes and the Nairobi skyline in the back.
Karura Forest
For recharging batteries, there is a small entrance fee of 600 ksh. This place is perfect for long walks. There are cool caves and waterfall, plus we had a super nice lunch in The River Cafe. When the weather is good, you can rent bikes and enjoy a dedicated path. Great for escaping the busy streets of Nairobi.
One Off Contemporary Gallery
Magical place with a sculpture garden and the nicest stuff serving complimentary coffee & cookies. From the very start, you know the place is special, a long alleyway prepares you for the experience of being in a dream house. There is art everywhere, amazing birds and dogs. The gallery exposes East African artists and does a great job at being available to answer any questions you might have. It's a place to be inspired.
Pallet Cafe
Coffee with a cool concept supporting deaf people and employing them here. Another location near Karura forest with the same idea is Traventure cafe. On the wall, you have posters showing you how to order the different types of coffee, and it's great fun to interact with the waiters using sign language. The location is very peaceful and nicely designed, it's probably a great place for remote work. It's good, affordable, and for a good cause, go check them out !
We visited all of these places in November 2023, hopefully they remain as cool with time. For more pictures and ideas of stuff to do around Kenya check out our instagram @lisaandpol
